Inherited from Prakrit -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Compare Sanskrit -इल (-ila), -ल (-la), and Proto-Indo-European *-lós, whence Latin -illus. Cognate with Nepali -इलो (-ilo), -ईलो (-īlo).
