Inherited from Old East Slavic -ьѥ, -ье (-ĭje, -ĭje), from Proto-Slavic *-ьje. Doublet of -ие (-ye), a borrowing from Church Slavonic.

  1. Abstract noun suffix; forms part of larger suffixes and exists on its own especially as a suffix added to compound words.
  2. Suffix used to create names of locations in conjunction with prefixes.
    при- (pry-) + ‎Дністер (Dnister, Dniester) + ‎-о́в (-óv) + ‎-'я (-ʺja) → ‎Придністро́в'я (Prydnistróvʺja, Transnistria)

Usage notes

  • The stress is drawn onto the preceding syllable.
  • A velar may turn into a palatal as a result of the Slavic first palatalization
