Etymology

From Middle English Antecrist, from late Old English Antecrist, from Late Latin antichrīstus, from Ancient Greek ἀντίχριστος (antíkhristos). By surface analysis, anti- +‎ Christ. The modern spelling of the word is due to an effort to reflect the Latin etymon.

Usage notes

In contemporary English, the word is often (but not always) preceded by the definite article (the Antichrist), parsed as a proper noun. However, the word has a common noun sense and thus is sometimes lowercased and can take the indefinite article (an antichrist); although it more often denotes a single figure in modern usage, it was originally used to describe any of several people prophesied to fill this role.
