Etymology

Borrowed from Latin aporia and Ancient Greek ἀπορία (aporía, difficulty; impossibility). Comprised of ἄπορος (áporos, passageless) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-ĭ́ā). Further from ἀ- (a-, not) + πόρος (póros, passage), the latter of which is from πείρω (peírō, to pierce; to run through). From the roots of Proto-Hellenic *péryō and Proto-Indo-European *per- (to pass; to go forth).
