Etymology
Shortened from Bahia de Todos os Santos (“Bay of All Saints”), after a bay on its coast.
bahia is an archaic spelling of baía (“bay”); the name of the state was specially mentioned as an exception in the Brazilian Orthographic Form of 1943, which otherwise removed ⟨h⟩ within words. However, derived terms such as baiano (previously bahiano) did not receive this treatment.
Although the Orthographic Agreement of 1990 does not present any exceptions, this spelling is still officially adopted and listed in the Brazilian Academy of Letters’ Orthographic Vocabulary (VOLP).
