The first element may be equivalent to Koog (“polder”) (from Old Saxon kōg, from Proto-West Germanic *kaug) due to its geographical position at a mudflat; the second part looks equivalent to German Hafen (“harbor”) but can also be Hof (“court, farm”) or even Hag (“hedge”) in a form like Gellershagen (an informal subdistrict of Bielefeld).
