  1. a ceremony at which oaths or vows are taken
    1. (Germany, military) a ceremony where conscripted recruits are sworn in, distinct from the swearing-in of regular soldiers, which is called Vereidigung (since 2011, conscript service is voluntary, but it is still distinguished from regular voluntary service)
