Etymology

From late Middle High German huchen, of unclear origin. Diebold argues that it must be an early or pre-Proto-Indo-European substrate borrowing (anywhere from the eastern Pontic to the western Kirghiz steppes) and compares other fish of uncertain origin like salmon and char.[1]
