Etymology

From Middle Low German kötel. Also a Low and Central Franconian word. Cognate with Dutch keutel. Unrelated to German Kot (“feces”); instead, probably derived from the noun at hand in Dutch koot (“little bone”), thus originally “something hard”. Compare German Köte (“the heelbone of a horse; fetlock”).
