First attested as litholz in 1146. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of an uncertain first element and hout (“rising deciduous forest”). The first element may be related to Old High German lesa (“wrinkle”) and Middle Dutch lese (“track, furrow”). Alternatively, the toponym may derive from an unknown word suffixed with the collectivising suffix Old Dutch *-uþi. Compare Boekend, Leesten, Leusden, Lieseind, Liessent, Ulvend and Vaareind.
