Borrowed from Polish młotek, introduced by Polish-speaking immigrants during the industrialisation of the Ruhrgebiet.

  • The word was part of Ruhrgebiet miners’ slang. It is now somewhat dated in actual use, but is still considered a shibboleth for the Ruhrgebiet regiolect.
