Originally a past participle of vocāre, attested variant of vacāre, compare vacuus.

For the */ɔ/, cf. vocīvus < vacīvus. The form of the perfect passive participle is surprising, as vocātus is expected, like vacātus, and looks analogous to first conjugation verbs with perfect in -u- such as crepāre.
