Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *dus-dyu-s (bad (cloudy, rainy) sky, bad weather), from *dus- (bad) + *dyu-s (zero-grade), from *dyew- (sky, heaven). Compare Sanskrit दुर्दिन (durdina, bad weather, rainy day) < *dus-di-nom.
