Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *dus-dyu-s (“bad (cloudy, rainy) sky, bad weather”), from *dus- (“bad”) + *dyu-s (zero-grade), from *dyew- (“sky, heaven”). Compare Sanskrit दुर्दिन (durdina, “bad weather, rainy day”) < *dus-di-nom.
