Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *weydwōs, from *weyd- (“to know”) + *-wṓs (stative participle suffix), literally “who has witnessed”.[1] Compare Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍄𐍅𐍉𐌸𐍃 (weitwōþs, “witness”), Ancient Greek εἰδώς (eidṓs).
