From Proto-Indo-European *weydwōs, from *weyd- (to know) +‎ *-wṓs (stative participle suffix), literally who has witnessed.[1] Compare Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍄𐍅𐍉𐌸𐍃 (weitwōþs, witness), Ancient Greek εἰδώς (eidṓs).
