Proto-Germanic

Etymology

From *augô (eye) +‎ *-janą,[1] or perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₃okʷéyeti (to cause to see), from *h₃ekʷ- (to see; eye) +‎ *-éyeti (causative), with the same metathesis *agw- > *aug- seen in the noun; in the latter case it is unclear which word influenced the other. Piecewise doublet of *augnijaną, an apparently more recent formation.

Pronunciation
