From Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (to be flat; palm). Cognate with Lithuanian lópa (paw, claw), Proto-Slavic *lapa (paw),[1] as well as perhaps dialectal Armenian լափ (lapʻ), լուփ (lupʻ, palm, flat of the hand).
