From Proto-Indo-European *h₁rh̥₁-s-nó-m,[1] from *h₁reh₁- (to rest) + *-s-[2] + *-nóm, related to *rastō (rest) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rh̥₁-s-tó-s). Alternatively, cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *radás (birth, genus), from *(H)rodʰ-sno-m,[3] from a *(H)redʰ- (to appear, come into existence) +‎ *-snom.
