Etymology

From earlier *pьsrъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *piś-ras, from Proto-Indo-European *piḱ-rós, from the root *peyḱ- (to mark, paint). Morphologically *pьsati +‎ *-rъ.[1]

Direct cognate with Ancient Greek πικρός (pikrós, sharp, pointed). Semantically close to Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos), Proto-Germanic *faihaz.
