Derived from Proto-Indo-European *wer-. Cognates include Hittite 𒉿𒊏𒀀𒉌 (wa-ra-a-ni, to burn), Old Armenian վառեմ (vaṙem, to fire), possibly Etruscan 𐌅𐌄𐌓𐌔𐌄 (verse, fire).
