Etymology

Composed of *siɬ (“hot”) +‎ *-ja (“nominalizer suffix”), literally “hotness-season”.

According to Vajda-Werner (2022) and Fortescue-Vajda (2022), a compound of *siɬ (“hot”) +‎ *χek (“day”), where the 'day' part would later be replaced by *maŋ (“place”) in Kottic. This explanation, however, fails to accommodate Arin and Pumpokol words for 'summer', both of which are omitted in their work.
