From Middle High German rotz, roz, from Old High German roz, hroz, from Proto-West Germanic *hrott, *hrot, *hrutt (“snot, slime”), which is likely ultimately of imitative origin.[1]
Cognate with Old English hrot. Possibly related with Old High German hrūzan, Old English hrūtan (“to snore”). Compare also Ancient Greek κόρυζα (kóruza, “mucus”).
