Uranus
See also: Uranüs
English
Etymology
Borrowed from Latin Ūranus, from Ancient Greek Οὐρανός (Ouranós), from οὐρανός (ouranós, “sky, heaven”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈjʊɹənəs/
Audio: (file) - IPA(key): /jʊˈɹeɪnəs/ (Received Pronunciation), /juˈɹeɪnəs/ (US)
Audio (US): (file) - Hyphenation: U‧ran‧us
- Rhymes: -ənəs, -eɪnəs
- Note: By the rules of Latin accentuation, the stress would fall on the first syllable because the "a" is short. The more recent pronunciation with a stress on the second syllable, likely influenced by uranium, is sometimes avoided or proscribed because of the homophony with your anus in conversational speech.[1]
Proper noun
Uranus
- (astronomy) The seventh planet in our solar system, discovered in 1781 by William Herschel.
- Synonyms: Georgian planet, Georgium Sidus, Herschel, (humorous) Urectum, ♅
- 1789 June, “LETTER from M. DE LA LANDE, on the NAME of the PLANET HERSCHEL, to the EDITORS of the JOURNAL des SCAVANS.”, in The European Magazine[1], page 437, column 1:
- The giving the name of Uranus, however, to the planet of M. Herſchel, in which M. Bode ſtill perſiſts, is an act of ingratitude to the author of that noble diſcovery, and an affront to that auguſt and munificent patron of aſtronomy, the King of Great Britain ; whoſe name ought to be preferred to every other, if that of the author had not a ſtill more forcible claim on our acknowledgements. Beſides, the name of Uranus is an impropriety, even according to the mythological ſyſtem. Sanchoniathon and Diodorus, it is true, ſay, that Saturn was the ſon of Uranus; but this is now allowed to be purely allegorical.
- (Greek mythology) The Greek god who personified the sky and heavens and fathered the Titans. Roman counterpart: Caelus.
- Synonym: Father Sky
