Etymology

Shortened from bánh vú bò (cow udder cake) < bánh (cake) +‎ vú bò (cow udder) < (breast) +‎ (cow).

According to a popular folk etymology, this term instead comes from bánh +‎ (to crawl), referring to how the cake "crawls" up to the rim of the bowl when steamed to completion.
