böta
Swedish
Etymology
From Old Norse bǿta, from Proto-Germanic *bōtijaną.
Verb
böta (present bötar, preterite bötade, supine bötat, imperative böta)
- to pay a fine, to be fined
- Han fick böta 2000 kronor för fortkörning.
- He had to [got to] pay a fine of 2000 kronor for speeding.
- (figuratively) to pay (suffer negative consequences)
- böta med sitt liv
- pay with one's life
Usage notes
- More rarely conjugated bötte, bött, says SAOL (1923). This is the case in the very antiquated proverb hött är med ingo bött (“a threat is with naught atoned, is not a crime”).
