Usage notes
- Sense 3 is in common use and not perceived as nonstandard by most speakers, but it is not supported by dictionaries. Although there is a lack of synonymous, active voice verbs with this meaning, the passive voice construction ser eletrocutado (“to be electrocuted”) may be substituted for levar choque (literally “to take a shock”).
- Some dictionaries ascribe this meaning to eletrocutir,[1] while others treat the two verbs as complete synonyms.[2]
- Some commentators further reject the use of eletrocutar for accidental deaths (sense 1) and prescribe that eletrocutar only be used in reference to electric chair execution (sense 2).[3] [4] This view is not shared by dictionaries and rejected by other commentators.[5]
