From German erkennen or Low German erkennen. Cognate with Danish erkende, Norwegian Bokmål erkjenne, Norwegian Nynorsk erkjenne, erkjenna, Dutch erkennen and Luxembourgish erkennen. Equivalent to er- + känna.
