From Middle High German pfūchen, phūchen, from Old High German *pfūhhan (to spit, puff), from Proto-Germanic *pukaną (to spit, puff), from Proto-Indo-European *bew- (to blow, swell). The modern onset f- instead of pf- is from East Central German. Compare English puke.
