Etymology

According to Çabej, from tjetër (“other”), parallel to Sanskrit अन्यत्र (anyatra, “elsewhere”) from अन्य (anya, “other”). According to Topalli, a formation from ku +‎ tjetër. After the syncope of the -u-, k- + -j- has given q -> gj, with the append of the -i and -u at the end, similar to vetiu from vetë.[1]
