luengq

Zhuang

Pronunciation

Etymology 1

Possibly from Proto-Tai *rwɯəŋᴬ (gutter; trough), of which form was reconstructed by Pittayaporn (2009),[1] although the tone of luengq [luːŋᴮ¹] shows irregularity as a reflex of it.

Li (1977) had reconstructed Proto-Tai *ru̯aŋᴬ² (trough) with words such as Po-ai (Yei Zhuang) luengz [luːŋᴬ²] while noting that Po-ai is monophthongized from a Proto-Northern Tai *ua ~ *uə or Proto-Tai *ua has already become Proto-Northern Tai *uu.[2]

In Southwesten Tai, possibly cognate with Thai ราง (raang), Lao ຮາງ (hāng), Shan ႁၢင်း (háang), Ahom 𑜍𑜂𑜫 (raṅ).

Possibly related to luengx (ditch between ridges), lueg (mountain valley).
