From Proto-Albanian *melj́-ō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂melǵ-.[1] Cognate to Latin mulgeō (to milk), Ancient Greek ἀμέλγω (amélgō, to milk), Old English melcan (to milk), and Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌿𐌺𐍃 (miluks).

Alternatively reconstructed as Late-Proto-Albanian *əmʲę́llə < *amélla(m) < Pre-Proto-Albanian *amélj́a(m), inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂mélǵm̥, from *h₂melǵ- (to milk).[2]
