Etymology
Inherited from Latin hospitem, accusative singular of hospes, from Proto-Italic *hostipotis, an old compound of hostis and the root of potis, possibly corresponding to a Proto-Indo-European noun *gʰóstipotis (whence also gospodin), a compound of *gʰóstis and *pótis. See also oaste. Compare Aromanian oaspi.
