Unknown. Some proposals:[1]

  • From an earlier form *sā̆wing, and related to sýja (“to sew”), that is, "sewed (planks of a bed)".
  • Sometimes compared to sá (“to sow”),[2][3] thus "that which is sowed (strewn) about".
  • From an earlier form *sahia-wangiR (literally “sedge field”), perhaps denoting a "stiff grass cushion"; see Proto-Germanic *sagjaz (“sedge”) and *wangaz (“field”) for the components.
