From Middle High German sameln, samlen, samelen, regarded as being formed by dissimilation from samenen,[1][2][3] which ultimately derives from Proto-Germanic *samnōną. Alternatively, inherited from Old High German *samalōn, from Proto-West Germanic *samalōn (“to bring together, assemble”).
