Borrowed from English split, itself from Middle Dutch and/or Middle Low German splitten, an intensive form of splîten, cognate of German spleißen. The borrowed word may have been reinforced or merged with modern Low German splitten, from the same source. Related with German Splitt (grit, stone chips), Splitter (splinter), and splittern (to sliver), which are all directly from Middle Low German.
