From Middle Dutch steech, stege, from Old Dutch steyga, *stega (“stairway”), from Proto-Germanic *stigǭ (“staircase; ladder”). Cognate with Middle Low German stēge, Old High German stega. More distantly related to Old High German steiga (from Proto-Germanic *staigō-) and German Steg (from Proto-Germanic *stiga-).
