Borrowed from Old Norse þeli (“ground freeze”) from Proto-Germanic *þelą. (compare dialectal Norwegian tele (“frozen earth”)). Cognates include synonymous Estonian teli (dialectal), Ingrian teli and Karelian jeäteli, all probably borrowed from Finnish.[1] Doublet of tela.
