Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *wandijan, from Proto-Germanic *wandijaną, originally ‘to make something twist or wind’, a causative form of *windaną (“to wreathe, twist”) (Old Saxon and Old English windan, English wind).

Cognate with Old Frisian wenda, Old English wendan, Old High German wentan (Dutch & German wenden), Old Norse venda (Swedish vända), Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽.
