Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *muťťomai, from Proto-Indo-European *muk-yé-tor, a present tense of *(s)mewk- (to let loose, release); compare Sanskrit मुच्यते (mucyate, to be set free, released) and more distantly ēmungō (to wipe or blow the nose) and Irish smuga (mucus, snot).
