Etymology
From Ancient Greek ὑπερηφανία (huperēphanía, “pride, arrogance”) by procope, from ῠ̔πέρ (hŭpér, “over, above”) + φᾱνός (phānós, “appearing, shining, bright, resplendent”) from φαίνω (phaínō, “to appear, show forth, shine”) from Proto-Hellenic *pʰáňňō from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (“to shine”). Equivalent to περήφανος (perífanos, “proud”) + -ία (-ía).
