Etymology
Evidently a third-person singular past II / subjunctive copulative (conjugated) form of the particle аф (af). Morphologically from аф (af) + -о- (-o-) + -ль (-ľ), where the last component is a derivation from Proto-Mordvinic *uľə- (“to be”). Compare мораль (moraľ, “he/she/it would sing ~ would have sung”), see апак (apak) for suggested cognates.
