Etymology

Evidently a third-person singular past II / subjunctive copulative (conjugated) form of the particle аф (af). Morphologically from аф (af) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ -ль (), where the last component is a derivation from Proto-Mordvinic *uľə- (to be). Compare мораль (moraľ, he/she/it would sing ~ would have sung), see апак (apak) for suggested cognates.
