хаал
Yakut
Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *kiāl-, compare Turkish kalmak.
Verb
хаал • (qaal)
- (intransitive) to stay, to remain
- (after the -ан form of a verb) to do something consistently or continuously, to keep or end up doing something
Usage notes
The second sense is found elsewhere in the world. Compare "he stay working" (and the similar expression "he steady working") in Black English, as well as the development of the progressive aspect in the Romance languages (ultimately from Latin stō (“I stand, I stay”)).
