Etymology

In the Ancient Roman era this city was known as Κλαυδιούπολις (Klaudioúpolis), in honor of Emperor Claudius. After the defeat of the Byzantines, the Turkish conquerors renamed the city Bolî, from Ancient Greek πόλις (pólis, city), in this case just a shortened form of Κλαυδιούπολις (Klaudioúpolis).
