Inherited from Aramaic מגלא. Originally feminine as seen from the diminutive form ܡܲܓܠܘܿܣܬܵܐ (maglōstā) and the Classical Syriac cognate. Compare Hebrew מַגָּל (maggāl), Arabic مِنْجَل (minjal) (according to Fraenkel perhaps borrowed from Aramaic), as well as Persian منگال (mangâl), Zoroastrian Dari mangāl, Semitic loanwords.
