Inherited from Aramaic תַּוְרָא (tawrā), from Proto-Semitic *ṯawr-; compare Arabic ثَوْر (ṯawr), Hebrew שׁוֹר (shor) and Akkadian 𒋗𒌑𒊒 (šūrum). The latter noun is an occupational noun derived from the former.
