1. expresses proximity, be-, by-

   अपि- (api-) + कर्ण (karṇa, “ear”) → अपिकर्ण (apikarṇa, “ears-region”)

This prefix becomes more infrequent in the later language and is mostly replaced by अभि- (abhi-).
