Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háwǰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwg-os (strength), from *h₂ewg- (to increase, to enlarge). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬊𐬘𐬀𐬵 (aojah), Latin augustus (majestic, venerable), Old English weaxan (whence English wax), Lithuanian áukštas (high, tall).[1]
