Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háwǰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwg-os (“strength”), from *h₂ewg- (“to increase, to enlarge”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬊𐬘𐬀𐬵 (aojah), Latin augustus (“majestic, venerable”), Old English weaxan (whence English wax), Lithuanian áukštas (“high, tall”).[1]
