From Proto-Indo-European *lewǵ- (to break off, shatter) and in some forms from *lewg- (to bend). Cognate with Ancient Greek λῠγρός (lŭgrós, mournful), Latin lugeō whence English lugubrious; Old English lūcan (to pluck out, pull up), whence English louk.
