Etymology
Probably from वप् (vap, “to scatter, strew”), with parallel semantic developments (albeit via different roots) across Indo-European, such as with Ancient Greek δέρμα (dérma, “skin, hide”) and δέρω (dérō, “to skin, flay”), as well as English skin from the verbal to noun senses. The derivation from Proto-Indo-European *wamp- (“membrane (of bowels), intestines, womb”) (compare Old English womb, wamb (whence English womb)) is less likely.
