Etymology

Borrowed from Pali calācala (literally shaking and unshaking; moving and unmoving), from cala (shaking; moving) + acala (unshaking; unmoving); ultimately from Sanskrit चलाचल (calācala, idem), from चल (cala, idem) + अचल (acala, idem); possibly via Old Khmer ចលាចល (calācala, social or political turmoil, unrest, or disorder). By surface analysis, จล (jol) +‎ อจล.

Cognate with Modern Khmer ចលាចល (caʼlaacɑl).
