The "rhinoceros" sense is not given etymology by STEDT (kraṁʼ "rhinoceros"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. MED considers it equivalent with the "sturdy" sense, which is derived from STEDT by Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/m/b-raŋ (“strong, firm, tense, hard”), and compared with Old Chinese 強 (OC *ɡaŋ, *ɡaŋʔ, “strong”).
